Study showing success with B cell blocking for autoimmunity

Seeing an article in my inbox talking about studies to put autoimmune disease into remission using B cell blockades got me excited. The study was small and focused on Lupus not IBD, but the results were very promising and will hopefully promote more work in this area.

"all five patients were able to achieve drug-free remission at three months and remained in remission at the time of publication (5-17 months) from a single anti-CD19 CAR T cell treatment"

Further,

"All patients had reduced levels of serum autoantibodies, indicating that the treatment may lead to more widespread effects that result in the reduction of symptoms."

We are at the precipice of exciting times for studies and treatments across a disease category that when you envelop all autoimmune conditions affect nearly as many people as cancer but have received a fraction of the attention and funding.
