Life has been full since we opened our Gluten-free Bistro in Santa Cruz at the beginning of the year, and has left me little time to post here, but the new place is not the only big news these days. 10 years ago, I was at rock bottom with my Crohn’s — I had moved my family to California to get better care, nearly died from sepsis, and was facing permanent ostomy surgery. I heard Jane McGongigal speak about her recovery from a brain injury on the Tim Ferriss podcast, and the game she created to get herself back and something ignited in me. I created my own challenge to ride the Sea Otter Classic 50mi Gran Fondo— ordering a single speed bike online and creating a training plan to get me to the goal in 6 weeks.
March 6th, 2016 was my first ride to that goal — a ride that would change my life and biology forever.
Never underestimate what you’re capable of, what agency can do, and what we can learn about ourselves with compassion and determination. I have big plans to return to Sea Otter this year, but this time as a runner, participating in their first ever Trail Run. It should be a great challenge at 17k with ~1400ft of climbing. Game on, again!
